Qwa’Maurie A. Deaver, 18, Killed in Richland County Deputy-Involved Shooting: Sheriff Leon Lott Releases Body Cam Footage as K9 Specialist Zaid Abdullah, K9 Jet, Samantha Ramirez, and Nicolas Carroll Tracked Suspects

What should have been a quiet early Thursday morning in Richland County instead turned into a series of violent events that culminated in a deadly deputy-involved shooting. The incident began with reports of gunfire in residential neighborhoods, led deputies and a police K9 team on a lengthy search through nearby communities, and ended with an exchange of gunfire that left 18-year-old Qwa’Maurie A. Deaver dead.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office later identified Deaver as the individual who died during the confrontation on Summit Ridge Drive. Sheriff Leon Lott described the situation as one of the most complicated and dangerous incidents the department has faced this year. The case involved multiple shooting scenes, several deputies, a K9 unit, and an ongoing investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). As authorities review body-camera footage and evidence, Deaver’s family, friends, and community members are seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Initial Shooting Incidents

The chain of events began around 12:15 a.m. when deputies responded to reports of gunfire on Sagamare Road. Upon arrival, they found that bullets had struck a residence and several vehicles, although no one was injured. Residents reported hearing multiple shots and seeing individuals run toward a vehicle before leaving the area.

Investigators collected shell casings and documented damage at the scene. Roughly two hours later, deputies were called to another shooting on Spring Oak Drive, where a home had also been hit by gunfire. Once again, there were no reported injuries. Authorities soon suspected the two incidents were connected because of their similarities and close proximity in time and location.

K9 Search Leads to Residence

Following the second shooting, deputies deployed a K9 team to track potential suspects. K9 Specialist Zaid Abdullah and his dog, Jet, followed a scent trail from the Spring Oak Drive scene. The search took the team through several yards, wooded areas, and drainage paths for approximately 30 minutes.

Additional deputies joined the effort as the trail eventually led them to a home on Legend Oaks. By this point, it was around 2:20 a.m.

Gunfire Erupts

According to Sheriff Lott, deputies approached the residence, identified themselves as law enforcement officers, and issued verbal commands. Authorities say that several individuals outside the home then opened fire on the deputies using both rifles and handguns.

The deputies sought cover and returned fire. Sheriff Lott stated that shots were coming from multiple directions, creating a chaotic and dangerous situation. Body-camera footage reportedly shows deputies announcing their presence and ordering suspects to stop shooting while taking cover from incoming rounds.

The gunfire continued until additional officers arrived. Once the scene was secured, deputies detained one individual and discovered another person unresponsive on the ground.

Identification of the Deceased

The deceased was later identified as 18-year-old Qwa’Maurie A. Deaver of Columbia. The coroner’s office has not yet released an official cause of death pending an autopsy, though reports indicate he suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family Remembers Deaver

Family members described Deaver as a recent high school graduate who planned to attend trade school to study HVAC repair. He lived with his mother and younger siblings and was remembered as a caring and quiet young man.

Speaking on behalf of the family, his aunt said she could not believe her nephew would intentionally fire at police officers and expressed confusion about the events that led to his death. Friends echoed those sentiments, describing him as kind, easygoing, and someone who avoided trouble.

Sheriff Lott acknowledged the tragedy of losing a young life but maintained that deputies were responding to gunfire directed at them and acted to protect themselves. He emphasized that the ongoing investigation would ultimately determine the facts of the case.
